Winter is here and so is the weather and driving conditions that come with it. Navigating the roads in Idaho during the long cold season can be tough. There are days that a drive that typically takes someone 10 minutes will take over half an hour or longer. Drivers move slower, the roads are more slick, and it can be scary to be on the road. When it comes to heading out to go to work, run errands, or have some winter fun, make sure to follow these tips to make it to your destination safely this winter in Idaho.

Snow Tires and Chains in Idaho

The Twin Falls Sheriff's Department recently posted on Facebook a survival guide for navigating winter this season. You can see the post above, but the first thing they mention is snow tires and chains. Depending on where you are headed in Idaho this winter, you may need to put chains on or make sure you have winter tires. If you are a family that likes to visit the mountains often to go skiing, snowboarding, or tubing, then it is best to make sure your vehicle is prepared for the conditions as your vehicle increases in elevation.

You never know when your vehicle will get stuck and if so for how long. It is best to be prepared for a long sit in case it occurs, which is why it is smart to keep extra winter weather gear in your car. Keep extra coats, waterproof clothes, and windproof clothes in your trunk or somewhere in the vehicle.

Not only should you have extra gear in the vehicle, but you also should have winter supplies as well to be prepared for any winter weather that you could drive into unexpectedly. Make sure to have an extra water bottle and food in your car, in case you are waiting for awhile for a storm to pass or for help to come get you out of where you might be stuck. If you aren't near any civilization, you will want those snacks and drinks.

Continuing to add to your supply list, it is best to have a winter survival kit as well. Have a first-aid kit in case someone gets hurt when trying to push the vehicle out. Make sure to have a blanket to stay warm for long periods of time if you are stuck. Have a flashlight to help at night and a shovel in case you need to dig your way out.

Most importantly, in the winter it is vital to make sure someone is aware of where you are going, especially if headed towards the mountains where there might be no service. This is a great way to know help will come if you are stuck and unable to get ahold of anyone, as someone will likely be awaiting your call to know you are safe. If that call never comes, they at least know where you are headed and can send help.
