The weather is constantly changing, and with the wind, the rain, and the back and forth between nice and yucky days, it can cause allergies and many sneezes and coughs to occur. It is not uncommon to walk into work or drop your kid off at school to find out one of their classmates is ill or one of your coworkers is as well. Many diseases are floating around these days, and unfortunately, if not treated correctly, they could put you or your child in the hospital. Here are some symptoms to be on the lookout for and how to best avoid ending up in the hospital this time of year in Idaho.

Some nasty diseases are going around right now, and depending on what you get, it can take you out of work for a day or two, or even for a week or more. These past two weeks, my family got hit by the flu and it has taken a toll on every member of my family, including hospitalizing one of my children. If not treated correctly, it can turn into pneumonia and can hospitalize adults even. There is also RSV going around, COVID, and a handful of viruses as well. If you feel a fever coming on, coughing, sneezing, nausea, or fatigue, odds are you have one of the above, and it won't stop at only one symptom. It is important to go to the doctor, but it is more important to keep an eye on your children, as they are more affected than we are.

Anytime you drop your child off at daycare or school, there is a high chance that they will come home with something, especially this time of year. Kids are constantly sharing diseases, and it seems inevitable that your child will eventually pick one of them up. This can be scary, especially for families with younger ones at home, as their bodies may not be able to fight off diseases the same as their older siblings. It is important to be keeping an eye out for your little ones and if anything seems off, to take them to the doctor, urgent care, or even the emergency room immediately. It can be a little thing like coughing, struggling to breathe, to sinus or ear infections. You can never be too careful and their health can turn quickly, so it is better to be safe than sorry. Many kids have had to be admitted in the Magic Valley for something that seemed small, only to find out it was much worse than originally thought.

There is no way to avoid these illnesses unless you lock yourself and your family in your home, but that isn't realistic for most. The best thing to do is to continue taking vitamins and to monitor your children as best you can. Make sure everyone is getting rest, drinking plenty of fluids, and doing the best they can to take care of themselves. Likely, one of these illnesses will still invade your home, but hopefully, it doesn't get too bad, and it will only lead to a day or two out of work and school. Good luck, as flu season is here, and it is strong this year.
