The Forest Service Sawtooth Avalanche Center in Ketchum has continued a backcountry avalanche warning form 700am Monday to 700am Tuesday, affecting the following areas.

  • The Pioneer
  • Soldier
  • Smoky
  • Boulder

Sawtooth Mountains including the mountains near:

  • Fairfield
  • Bellevue
  • Hailey
  • Ketchum
  • Sun Valley
  • Galena
  • Summit
  • Smiley Creek
  • Stanley


The avalanche danger for the warning area will rise to high today and possibly extreme by tomorrow.

Recent heavy snow combined with wind will likely create widespread areas of unstable snow. The Sawtooth Avalanche Center wars backcountry travelers to stay off of and out from underneath slopes steeper than 30 degrees. Avalanches may run long distances and can run into mature forests. Choose conservative terrain.

The warnings have prompted several highways to close near the affected locations. The Idaho Transportation Department is reporting closures on US12, ID 21, ID 75 and US 93
