People Are Ruining This Incredible Cave 130 Miles From Twin Falls
Southern Idaho is an incredible labyrinth of lava tubes and caves that both locals and tourists set aside time to explore for themselves. Some of these individuals are definitely NOT packing out what they are taking in.
I'm always excited to see people post new videos to sites such as YouTube showing personal trips to Idaho's remarkable natural wonders. The majority of these videos are posted by well-meaning Idahoans that want to share their excitement of exploration with others. Sites such as Hell's Half Acre, Craters of the Moon National Monument and Preserve, and Tea Kettle and Dead Horse Caves attract hikers, spelunkers, and curios cavers from all across the world.
One cave, in particular, that is located about 130 miles northwest of Twin Falls has seen repeated vandalism from visitors. The filth being left behind has turned one of the state's coolest caves into an underground landfill. To see Kuna Caves for yourself, it starts with a 50-foot descent down a steel ladder.
If you read the comments from people that have visited the caves in recent years, it's not hard to pick up on the sense of frustration these individuals are feeling. Garbage continues to pile up, and don't even get me started about the graffiti. Who in the hell tags an underground cave? I thought the purpose of this dumb hobby was to have your pathetic "artwork" seen by the masses.
We need to do better. We need to not destroy everything in our path so that our children will be able to explore as we did, and not feel shame about the harm we are inflicting on this planet.
