Freedom of Speech Has Been Taken Away From Residents in the Gem State
America is the best country on Earth. I know some currently disagree with that statement, but having the right to disagree with it is one of the reasons that the statement is true. This country is built on freedom, hope, and truth. Americans have the right to express their discomfort towards their government, people they don't like, and have the right to protest things they don't believe in. Well, they used to. Over the last couple of years, it seems like fewer and fewer of these rights still exist. It is a fair question to ask, as 2025 comes to an end, have people in Idaho lost the freedom of speech?
The Freedom of Speech in Idaho
For the most part, Americans and residents in Idaho have had the right to say what they want, stand up for their beliefs, and disagree with those who believe differently. There are obvious exceptions to this, as you can't go around threatening lives, hurting people, or damaging things, but overall, you have the right to firmly state your case or have an opinion. Lately, it seems if your opinion does not line up with those who have more money and essentially run things, then you are wrong and have to step down, backtrack your statement, or keep your mouth shut. This is not freedom, and is instead a dictatorship. Sadly, those with money run the world and run Idaho as well. This isn't anything new, but it is becoming more apparent as those with it are taking away freedom of speech from those in the Gem State, and around the country, for that matter.
No More Freedom of Speech in Idaho
In 1791, the First Amendment was passed, which states, 'Congress shall make no law... abridging the freedom of speech, or of the press; or the right of the people peaceably to assemble, and to petition the Government for a redress of grievances'. While this right has not officially been taken away, there are signs that it is headed in that direction. As a journalist, my job is to report the news, but also to have opinions. Some stories have had to be deleted, retracted, and apologies issued over an opinion that goes against what this amendment stands for. Sadly, there are those with money who throw temper tantrums like toddlers until they get their way, and want to manipulate the media, citizens, and customers alike. Does this sound like freedom of speech to you?

This isn't new, but it has gotten worse. America is changing, and most agree it is not for the better. It doesn't matter if you are a republican or a democrat, you should have the right to state your opinion and be heard. Some will disagree with you, but being forced to hold your tongue, change your mind, and apologize for your beliefs is taking away your right and First Amendment.
