It was just a few years ago that I was glued to the USGS website as dozens of earthquakes were being reported around Idaho in a short amount of time. Utah and Washington get their fair share of quakes, too, but it’s been a quiet month for all three states.

With the exception of a small quake in Utah a few days ago and an explosion that hit so hard it registered on the USGS monitors, there hasn’t been anything shaking in the West. Even California has been pretty stable (in regards to earthquakes, not politics or economy).

Utah Shakes But Idaho and Washington Remain Calm

I have family in Utah, some even live in West Valley, where the most recent earthquake happened. The 3.5 magnitude quake hit on February 13th at 6:32 PM. One of my brothers immediately sent a message to our family group chat, ‘Anybody else feel that?’ which was followed by almost everyone saying they hadn’t, and my mom, who responded with ‘I thought I felt something’.

A 3.5 earthquake isn’t a large earthquake. I was standing in my kitchen a few years ago with my kids when a 4.6 magnitude hit near Stanley, ID, and I didn’t feel it. Two of my kids did, and the other only knew something happened because the hanging lights started moving.

The explosion near Pasco, WA, happened on February 2nd and registered at 2.8 on the USGS scale. Earthquakes and explosions aren't the only things I miss. I have yet to hear or feel the mysterious booms that seem to be constantly happening around us.
