There are many flags to fly, and many people enjoy putting a flag in front of their home to celebrate something they are passionate about and express it to everyone. It can be a sports team, your state, the country you live in, or several other things. The great thing about living in America is having the freedom to express yourself and to fly these flags that represent something you believe in. While flags in front of a home are one thing, when it comes to flying flags at school or work, typically they are limited to American flags or state flags. Recently some flags have been banned south of Idaho, and the Gem State may follow this trend as well, but is it taking away people's freedom?

Last week it was announced that Utah has become the first state to ban the Pride flag in front of government buildings and schools. As expected, this has been met with divided responses. For those apart of the LGBTQ community they are upset, while others think this is a good call. It has created controversy, but Utah may not be the only state to do this. Is this Utah taking away people's freedom of speech or is this the way it should be? Idaho is already in the process of trying to pass the same law, but it isn't signed and final yet. If so, Idaho would become the second state to ban the flag in schools and in front of government buildings, with perhaps more to follow.

Many will be upset about this law passing in Utah and potentially headed that way in Idaho, but should they be? While expressing yourself is a part of living in America, why does a flag that represents sexual preference need to be at schools and government buildings? Since when is someone's sexual preference worth being flown in front of buildings that represent education and our government? These flags are great to fly in front of homes, cars, and places that represent these communities, but sexual orientation does not define America or education. The flags should not be banned, but they should be flown at the right places, which schools and government buildings are not.

Many will be upset about the banning of the Pride flag at these places, but the great thing about our country is that they have the right to be upset and express that frustration. Time will tell how many other states will follow and which ones will continue to fly the flag proudly in front of their schools and government buildings.
