Shane McAnally Ties for Most Nods Ever in CMA Song of the Year Category
As the Country Music Association revealed their nominees for the 2019 CMA Awards on Wednesday morning (Aug. 28), ace Nashville songwriter Shane McAnally earned a nod in the category of Song of the Year, for his work with Kacey Musgraves on her nominated song, "Rainbow." The recognition is McAnally's seventh mention in the category -- a record-tying number.
"Rainbow" brings the songwriter into a tie with Alan Jackson and Bob McDill -- both of whom have also written seven Song of the Year contenders over the course of their careers -- for most-ever nominations in the category. Furthermore, McAnally has achieved this milestone faster than any other songwriter. Over the course of seven years, he's earned seven CMA Song of the Year nominations: "Mama's Broken Heart," "Follow Your Arrow," "American Kids," "Take Your Time" and "Body Like a Back Road" each netted him a nod, in addition to "Rainbow."
McAnally is one of Nashville's most prolific and in-demand songwriters, with over 40 No. 1 hits to his name. He and Musgraves are frequent collaborators, and "Rainbow" is one of two tracks he co-wrote for her 2018 project Golden Hour. McAnally also serves as a judge and regular contributor to NBC's Songland, a new televised competition for songwriting hopefuls.
The 2019 CMA Awards are set for Nov. 13 at Nashville's Bridgestone Arena; the ceremony will be broadcast live on ABC beginning at 8PM ET. Carrie Underwood is returning to co-host the event for the 12th consecutive year, with Reba McEntire and Dolly Parton as her guest co-hosts.
The 2019 CMA Awards will find the CMA celebrating country music's legendary female figures, according to a press release, but details as to those plans have yet to be revealed. Performers, presenters and other details of the big night are also still to be announced.
