ITD Worker Seriously Injured in Collision on Closed Highway

On August 24, 2024, a tragic incident occurred on a closed section of State Highway 33 in Fremont County, Idaho, resulting in serious injuries to an Idaho Transportation Department (ITD) worker.

Incident Details

The collision took place at approximately 7:22 a.m. on SH33 near mile marker 107. A gray Ford Fusion, driven by a 32-year-old man from Rexburg, Idaho, was traveling eastbound on a section of the highway that had been closed by the ITD and Rocky Mountain Power due to power lines and poles obstructing the roadway. Despite roadblocks clearly marked with cones and flashing lights, the driver continued through the closure and struck the ITD worker who was standing outside his white Ford F350.

ITD Worker Airlifted to Hospital

The ITD worker, a 41-year-old man from Idaho Falls, sustained serious injuries as a result of the collision. He was transported via air ambulance to a local hospital for treatment. His current condition remains unknown.

Driver Cited for Multiple Violations

The driver of the Ford Fusion was not injured in the crash. He was wearing a seatbelt at the time of the incident and was cited for inattentive or careless driving, as well as for driving on an expired license. After being cited, the driver was released from the scene.

Road Closure and Safety Measures

State Highway 33 from Newdale to Tetonia remains closed for an extended period as the Idaho Transportation Department works to clear the power line debris from the roadway. Drivers are urged to check the 511.idaho.gov website for updates on road closures and to respect all roadblock and safety measures.
