Curious, Furry Bandits Mess With Dogs At South Idaho Campsite

I've done a good deal of camping in central and southern Idaho over the past two decades since visiting the state for the first time. There's one truly unique, lakeside campsite east of Twin Falls that is known for sprawling lawns, dog-friendly accommodations, top-notch water play, and its playful, nocturnal visitors.

I recently returned to a campsite I hadn't spent an overnight at since the pre-COVID days. As we were setting up, we reminisced about the previous stay and something that surprised us--and our bulldog--in the middle of the night.

Southern Idaho's Lake Walcott Is Known For Many Things, Including Those Tree Bandits That Visit After Sunset

Located roughly 50 miles east of Twin Falls is Lake Walcott. I last camped there in 2019 with my wife, son, and dog 'Babs.' The kayaking, boating, and jet skiing are all terrific there, and there are also sprawling lawns for barbeques, outdoor games, and picnics, and make sure to bring the bikes because the property offers trails all around the lake.

One thing you'll want to know prior to setting up camp there is that the area has a massive raccoon population. We spent most of our first night there in 2019 watching these critters frolic in the trees and tease our dog while enjoying some cold beer and gazing up at the stars.

They are harmless, and we got a kick out of them. They patrol the park pretty good after midnight, so make sure to have your food and valuables stashed in your car or tent before you call it a night.
