As trendy pejoratives are concerned, few are quite as ubiquitous as "Karen."

A medieval Scandinavian name, Karen is a shortened form of Katherine. It's derived from the Greek word "aikaterine," and means something close to "pure" or "clear" according to VeryWellFamily. But that was medieval Karen. Today's 21st Century Karen couldn't be more different.

Our definition of a "Karen" is a self-righteous, middle-aged Caucasian woman with a habit of asking for the manager. Easily recognized by her chunky highlights and Kate + 8 coiffure, she forces herself and her opinions in places and circumstances that do not concern her whatsoever. But that definition seemed rather incomplete, so we decided to reference the good ole dictionary. According to Dictionary.com, a Karen is a dozen times more wretched than what we described.

Karen is a pejorative slang term for an obnoxious, angry, entitled, and often racist middle-aged white woman who uses her privilege to get her way or police other people’s behaviors.
As featured in memes, Karen is generally stereotyped as having a blonde bob haircut, asking to speak to retail and restaurant managers to voice complaints or make demands, and being an anti-vaxx, Generation X soccer mom.
