Unlike mass murderers like those who shoot a large number of people in a public setting, such as a movie theater or campus, serial killers are individuals who murder people randomly and then take what is referred to as a "cool down" period before striking again.

Examples of prolific serial killers in United States history include John Wayne Gacy, Jeffrey Dahmer, Gary Ridgway, Richard Ramirez, and Ed Gein. These killers were all ultimately caught after years of committing heinous crimes against people they barely knew, or didn't know at all.

One crime website compiled a list of the likely number of such people living in each state based on past criminal history, unsolved homicides, and other data.

Perhaps the most infamous serial killer to ever target the Pacific Northwest was Ted Bundy.  Bundy admitted to murdering one young female hitchhiker abducted from Interstate 84 near Boise in 1974. Her identity remains a mystery, and she is known in the true crime circles as "Snake River Jane Doe".

World Population's crime/safety page predicts as many as 10 serial killers currently residing in the Gem State. Between 1992 and 2019, it's estimated that serial killings were responsible for as many as 45 victims, according to the source.
