The National Weather Service has issued a Severe Thunderstorm Watch for parts of Southern Idaho, Nevada, and the Magic Valley through 8:00 pm tonight.

Update (6:30pm - Sept 5): Severe Thunderstorm Warnings have been extended to include most of Twin Falls and Jerome Counties until 6:45 PM. The warning includes Twin Falls, Jerome, Kimberly, Murtaugh and Hollister. Damaging winds in excess of 60 mph and large hail is possible with this storm.

Update (5:40pm - Sept 5): The National Weather Service has upgraded Twin Falls and Jerome County to a Severe Thunderstorm Warning until 6:00 pm. A Severe Thunderstorm Warning has been issued for Northwestern Twin Falls County, Southeastern Elmore County and all of Gooding County until 6:00 pm. Damaging winds and hail larger than the size of quarters could occur with the storm.

Update (4:10pm - Sept 5): The National Weather Service has expanded the Severe Thunderstorm Watch for the entire Magic Valley and all of Southern Idaho. The watch has been issued for the Twin Falls, Jerome and Gooding areas until 8:00 PM. A Severe Thunderstorm Watch is also in effect for the Mini Cassia area and Wood River Valley until 11:00 PM.

The watch includes the counties:

  • Gooding
  • Jerome
  • Twin Falls
  • Elko (Nevada)
  • Camas
  • Elmore
  • Owyhee Counties

Damaging winds in excess of 60 mph and hail larger than the size of quarters is possible with any thunderstorms this afternoon and into this evening.

In addition to severe thunderstorms flash flooding is also possible across all of Southern Idaho. The National Weather Service says that rainfall rates of a half inch to an inch per hour are possible in the stronger storms. The heavy rain expected today combined with the rain that has fall over the past several days could lead to more flash flooding.
