Emojis have become a normal thing in society and get used more often than they should. People will use them for full sentences, without having to use a single word. Some people, myself included, need a cheat sheet at times to know what each emoji is referencing. I am sure you, just like many of us, have at some point received a text, or seen an emoji somewhere that you had to ask someone what it meant. While I am no expert I know enough to know what most mean. There is a placemat that has made the rounds at a food chain in Twin Falls, that some people have deemed inappropriate for the workplace.

While I may not be a hundred percent fluent in emoji speak, I know enough to know that this placemat can mean a few different things. Is my mind in the gutter, or does this mean what I think it does? What do you think it is trying to say? This placemat has been around for a bit but has caught the attention of many, trying to figure out what Taco John's was going for here. I had to directly ask a few employees what the placemat meant, and a few of them claimed they didn't know.

After a few minutes of looking and letting the chuckles settle down, my coworkers and I could not come to a mature conclusion on what the placemat was trying to say. It surely didn't stand for what we were all thinking, so I did some digging and questioning. Eventually, I was given the answer that it means, "but first we taco." It made sense once it was explained, but still, my mind wondered how this placemat got approved in the first place.

From a publicity standpoint, I love this placemat. It has people talking, laughing, and posting pictures of it. It encourages people to want to go to Taco John's to see it for themselves, which is what any business would want. It may offend some people, but the meaning of emojis is all on how they are interpreted. If your mind goes into the gutter, then that is on you. My mind did, but it was still funny to me. If you can see what they are trying to say before others, then you must speak better emoji speak than I do.

Emojis are not going anywhere; if anything quite the opposite. They are used more now than ever before, and more are being made all the time. The Taco John's placemat is a great example of how things can be misinterpreted if not educated in what they usually mean. It is a good idea to learn what they are used for, as well as the appropriate way to use them. For Taco John's things have worked out well for them, but that may not always be the case. Make sure to be careful how you use your emojis and who you send them to. Next time you eat at Taco John's enjoy the placemat and have fun reading it however you interpret it.
