Believe it or not, it can be good for an animal to end up at a shelter. Some animals are neglected or abandoned. Realize the animals at the shelter are the lucky ones who were able to find a place that would help them find a home.

Since I was very young, I have had the chance to experience many animals joining my family. Methods for pets entering our lives came in many forms. Adoption after someone passed, advertisement in the personals of someone entering a nursing home, kitten ‘followed’ us from the bus stop after school, and a co-worker had a surprise litter and handed puppies to anyone interested.

Some Have Pets Thrust Upon Them and Never Look Back

My husband’s first relationship with a pet was when he married me. After my boxer mastiff ran away and our 12-year-old Corgi passed from cancer, I wasn’t sure we would get any more pets. The animals were always mine, and I thought he just accepted them as part of the package deal.

He lasted almost a year without an animal and couldn’t take it any longer. He said it was his turn for a dog and went on the hunt. He called around to area shelters every few weeks and looked through ads for dogs for sale or surrender. He was getting desperate. Maybe his couch companion would never be found. But after 8 months of searching, the Twin Falls Human Society had a litter of puppies surrendered. He called ‘dibs’ on his quiet baby, and after she was old enough to be adopted, we brought Sasha home. 5 years later, we are a happy family with a severely over-pampered chihuahua mix. Here she is in repose upon her personal heating pad. Sigh.

Shelters are a Great Place to Find the Right Pet For You

The employees and volunteers at the Twin Falls Animal Shelter/People for Pets work hard every day to ensure that animals who find themselves in the shelter, find a permanent place to call home. It is a happy moment with each adoption that happens.
