TWIN FALLS, Idaho (KLIX) The cost for indigent burial and cremation in Twin Falls County has gone up.

Twin Falls County Commissioners Terry Kramer and George Urie, Leon Mills was not present, voted to increase the amount the county pays for people who can't afford a burial from $800 to $950. The cost is what is paid to area funeral homes to process and either bury a person or cremate them. If a county resident is buried an additional cost of $475 is added.

The county has several burial plots at a cemetery located in Filer for indigent citizens. County Commissioner Kramer says the county will usually sell assets belonging to the the deceased to cover the cost. The county works with most of the funeral operators in the county on a rotating basis to conduct the burial or cremation.

Commissioner Kramer says the commission took the initiative to raise the bill to bring it more in line with other counties and the cost it takes to bury a person. The commissioner says it hadn't been changed in more than a decade.
