For a game that revolves around stealing and stealth, vanishing save data wasn't the type of thievery we were hoping to experience.

Game Informer reports that dozens of Thief players have been claiming their saves have been corrupted or disappeared altogether. These claims appear to be specific to the PC, PlayStation 4 and Xbox One versions of Thief. Players say that their manual saves have been randomly disappearing while older saves along with side quest progression randomly disappear.

A Square Enix representative publicly acknowledged the problem and said, "We're aware of an issue that seems to be affecting some Thief players, preventing them from completing some levels. We're taking this very seriously – as a first step we're reading as many reports of the issue as possible, working to replicate it internally, so that we can understand what's causing it. We're sorry for any disruption to your game today, and we'll update you as soon as we have more information."

Gamers speculate that this is oriented around a loading problem when leaving Garrett's clock tower, where many players just instantly return to Garrett's base of operations despite trying to enter the city. Another issue involves players trying to create new save data outside the clock tower base; these saves aren't properly cementing themselves and are loading players to previous saves that were all dated before Apr. 1. Stealth enthusiasts are going to have to be even more careful than usual when trying to get any further in Thief.
