The new year is upon us in southern Idaho and across the planet. December 31 celebrations are a common practice in the United States and often involve a good deal of alcohol drinking.

Every year, people start the new year off in emergency rooms from repeating the same old party behavior. Champagne and fireworks aren't the best combination, and January 1 is a busy day for ER nurses and doctors in America.

Injuries to the face and hands are the most common types during these gatherings. Sparklers remain the most dangerous firework because parents often leave kids unsupervised with them, according to the Children's Hospital of Philadelphia.

Remember that aerial fireworks are prohibited in Twin Falls County. They can cause severe injuries and are often the reason behind home fires that break out on New Year's Eve. Any firework that shoots into the sky and explodes is considered an aerial.

Stray bullets fired during celebrations also result in injuries and even death occasionally. Idaho police will be responding to complaints of gunfire and illegal firework use Wednesday evening and Thursday morning.

Drinking and driving, use of illegal fireworks (aerials), discharging firearms, failing to safely secure pets, public drunkenness, domestic violence, and out-of-control bonfires are common problems associated with New Year's Eve. Please celebrate in a safe manner and don't put other people's lives at risk.
