Sex education in American classrooms is a hotly debated topic right now. With the overturning of Roe v Wade several weeks ago by the Supreme Court which ended federal abortion rights and left individual states to decide whether to allow the procedure or not, many Americans are now more comfortable with their kids being instructed on topics such as safe sex.

I remember being taught sexual education in the eighth grade where I attended school. We spent a couple of weeks on the subject, and our parents had to sign consent forms. I'm not sure that sitting through a sex education course at that age leaves a lasting impression on a 12 or 13-year-old kid, but my parents were all for it.

If memory serves me, the course was part lecture and part instruction on a VHS tape. I think the video portion of the study was animated, so it was hard to take seriously at times. Recent headlines regarding the Idaho Department of Health & Welfare's stance on the subject has sparked concern by state entities such as the Idaho Freedom Foundation.

Current Idaho education policies don't require sex education to be taught in public schools. Sex education wasn't taught widely in public schools until the 1970s, and each institution handles these courses differently. My daughter attended Canyon Ridge High School from 2016 to 2020, and only had one brief session dealing with the topic rather than a course that was weeks or a semester-long.
