Over the years, I've realized that Reddit is a great tool for community members to interact with one another by sharing concerns or praising work that is being done on a local level. There are also messaging forums that get a bit suspect, and they can leave people wondering what on Earth humans are doing behind closed doors in their free time.

Most of us have heard of Orson Welles' famous War of the Worlds radio broadcast from October of 1938. The scripted, radio theater bit about an alien invasion inspired by the H.G. Wells story was done with some drama pals of Welles and panicked a large number of the listening audience to the point where police were called and people genuinely feared for their lives. I own the complete broadcast on vinyl and usually fire it up in the days leading up to Halloween.

It turns out there has been at least one report of an invasion of a different sort near the north Idaho city of Coeur d'Alene. On Sunday (November 3), an area resident took to Reddit to warn people about gnomes that are allegedly sneaking around the city at night and collecting the fallen leaves from trees. I'm not sure if this individual is mistaking city clean-up crews for these tiny, mythological beings or if he/she happened to partake in certain party favors before posting, but the message certainly contained a sense of urgency.

Maybe it’s because I’m a nerd, or because I just watched the Rings of Power, but my latest delve into online real estate listings had me searching for keywords like ‘Hobbit’ and ‘Tolkien’.
