If you're looking to get out for some rockhounding with the family in the next few weeks before the weather gets too unforgiving, there's a region less than two hours outside of Twin Falls that has a documented history of being a bullseye for attractive mineral stones and fossilized wood. Set your maps app for Swan Falls Dam.

The region between the dam and the Oregon border contains dozens of gemstones and unique fossils, including agates, crystals, opals, and amethysts, according to rockhounding.org.

The weather is changing in south Idaho for the worse. Very soon, some of our favorite outdoor destinations will be inaccessible. The colder temperatures do however appeal to those who enjoy distancing themselves from the locals and enjoying nature without interruption.

Rockhounding enthusiasts should be aware of an area that's still accessible southwest of Boise in Ada County that is known for its Jasper and petrified wood abundance. The surrounding terrain of Swan Falls Dam is just 38 miles outside Boise and is known for its hidden treasures. The region between the dam and the Oregon border contains dozens of gemstones and unique fossils, including agates, crystals, opals, and amethysts, according to rockhounding.org.

Swan Falls also offers exceptional hiking, kayaking, and dirt and mountain biking along the south side of the Snake River. Don't forget to pack some warm clothes, chisels, shovels, and rock picks for the adventure.

If you have ever unearthed anything notable in this region of southwestern Idaho, please let us know. Enjoy the hunt and be careful.
