Well, this is an unexpected and perfect surprise: the latest internet buzz suggests that the absolutely brilliant 'Gravity' director Alfonso Cuaron is in talks to helm the Harry Potter spin-off 'Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them.' Take all of this with a grain of salt until an official announcement arrives, but it's difficult to imagine a more perfect choice for the job.

The news broke via Nikki Finke's Twitter feed, where she said that the recent Oscar-winner is currently in "deep talks" to take the gig:

As Potter-verse fans already know, Cuaron is no stranger to this franchise, having previously directed 'Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban' back in the day. Although his take on the material was controversial at the time (he diverged wildly from the book), it ultimately ended up informing all of the films that followed and is still one of the series' high water marks. Author J.K. Rowling (who is penning the screenplay for 'Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them') has sung his praises before, so we wouldn't be surprised if she had a hand in this.

It also makes sense since 'Prisoner of Azkaban' was the most animal-centric film of the series, which much of the action centering on Buckbeak the hippogriff. That creature was so memorable and beautifully realized that the thought of a movie filled with Cuaron-directed magical beasts just sounds transcendent.

But, is it all a little too perfect? After all, Cuaron just won an Oscar for making 'Gravity' and he's never held more sway in Hollywood than he does at this very moment. Is a Harry Potter spin-off the next thing he really wants to do? After all, he can do whatever the hell he wants after the insane success of 'Gravity.'

We'll keep you updated as soon as we learn more.
