BOISE, Idaho (AP) — The public transit agency in Idaho’s capital hopes to start a bike-sharing subscriber service in 2014 and says it’s close to collecting enough state, local and federal money to fund the $650,000 startup costs.

The Idaho Statesman reports Boise Bike Share would initially include 140 bike stations. Subscribers could use the bikes for 30 minutes at a time. In concept, it’s similar to programs including in Kansas City. Dave Fotsch, director of the Valley Regional Transit division, says a Federal Highway Administration grant will cover more than half expected $650,000 startup costs for bikes and stations.

The city of Boise contributed $64,000, with Boise State University and a local health district giving smaller amounts. Fotsch hopes to have 1,000 subscribers initially. He’s hoping not to have to use taxes.
