World of Warcraft Game Director Speaks on Official Sequel

We get to hear about the likelihood of an official World of Warcraft sequel, not an expansion, from one of the key people behind the popular MMORPG.

In a recent interview with Game Informer, Tom Chilton, World of Warcraft’s longtime game director, spoke about the upcoming Warlords of Draenor expansion and the surprising possibility of World of Warcraft II. We must note that there is a huge difference between doing another expansion and a full-fledged sequel. Since Blizzard tends to let many years pass between doing numbered entries of each of their main franchises (e.g., releasing Diablo III in 2012 when Diablo II launched in 2012), now is the perfect time to start a real sequel to the MMORPG now that WoW is hitting its ten-year anniversary.

When asked about wanting to do a sequel, Chilton said the following:

“Definitely. It’s something we have talked about. It’s something we have talked about for ten years.I think that there are a lot of challenges there in seeing how World of Warcraft II relates to World of Warcraft, do they live alongside each other, does one feed into the other, what is that product, etc. These are challenges that have to be figured out before that becomes a reality.”

While we probably won’t see a World of Warcraft II for many years (not until they’ve run out of expansion ideas), it’s still nice to see that Chilton is thinking of moving things forward. There are plenty of aspects of WoW’s engine and mechanics that are very outdated. We still think there’s plenty of room for more expansions and hope Warcraft IV gets made before World of Warcraft II.

World of Warcraft: Warlords of Draenor launches on Nov. 13.

Never forget that Warcraft had one of the craziest viruses ever.
