According to the National Weather Service, the advisory starts at 3 p.m. today and will be in effect until 10 p.m. Winds are expected to come from the west to southwest with speeds of up to 30 to 40 mph, and gusts of up to 55 mph. Such high winds can make driving difficult, according to the NWS, especially for high-profile vehicles.

The advisory affects Burley, Heyburn, Rupert, Idaho Falls, Pocatello and Rexburg.

“Wind will increase rapidly during the middle to late afternoon and continue very windy through the middle evening hours tonight,” the advisory reads. “Strong cross winds may develop on highways, making your vehicle more difficult to control.”

If you plan to travel northeastern Idaho, be aware that the NWS also has issued a snow advisory that will affect the cities of Ashton, Downey, Driggs, Henry, Island Park, Lava Hot Springs, Montpelier, Soda Springs and St. Anthony.

Locations above 5,000 feet could see 1 to 3 inches of snow this afternoon and evening, with heavier snow accumulation in the mountain passes.

“Anyone traveling through these areas this afternoon and evening should be prepared for slick travel,” the advisory reads.
