Another of Jim Henson's creations, 'Fraggle Rock' debuted on HBO in January of 1983. The show followed the adventures of the various inhabitants of an underground civilization including the Fraggles, and the Dozers. One of the best parts of the show was the opening theme song which never failed to get stuck in your head.

The show was cool when I was a kid, but I don't remember anything amazingly special about it. It turns out I was wrong.

'Fraggle Rock' is important because it was the first American show acquired for screening in the Soviet Union. Back then anything American or "western" was bad, and had no place in Soviet Union. However the Soviets--for some unknown reason--acquired 24 episodes of the show. 'Fraggle Rock' was first broadcast there on January 8, 1989.

Can you imagine Gorbachev watching 'Fraggle Rock'? It just boggles my mind. Dance your cares away, comrade?

Happy Fraggle Rock Day!
