What Replaces Idaho’s Personal Property Tax Money?
BOISE, Idaho (AP) — A state tax policy expert says a repeal of Idaho’s personal property tax on business equipment would force residential and commercial property owners to make up revenue losses to schools. Idaho State Tax Commission Policy Supervisor Alan Dornfest outlined the tax shift Tuesday in a presentation before the Senate Education Committee. Lawmakers are considering repealing the personal property tax businesses pay on desks, chairs and other equipment.S
The tax generates about $141 million annually, with the money spread to cities, counties and public schools. Dornfest says an automatic tax shift to residential and commercial property owners would kick in to make up the $38 million that goes to schools annually from the business property tax. He says the change would apply to all but two school districts in Idaho.
