Virgin Mobile just announced what could be the best deal on an iPhone and service, period. Starting June 29th, you can get an iPhone 4S on the Virgin Mobile network for $30 a month and that includes unlimited text and data. There's no contracts either. This is pre-paid goodness.

Virgin utilizes the Sprint Network in the Magic Valley, and their coverage map lists our area as good coverage. They're offering three plans:

  • $30 a month for 300 minutes and unlimited text and data
  • $40 a month for 1,200 minutes and unlimited text and data
  • $50 a month for unlimited everything

And you can get an additional $5 off a month is you set up your account as a direct pay from your debit or credit card.

Cult Of Mac has already done the math, and in a battle royale between AT&T, Verizon, Sprint, and Virgin, Virgin's plan will save you over a thousand dollars over a two year period. If you sign up for Virgin's $40 per month plan you'll pay only $1610 for two years compared to $2400 (AT&T and Verizon) and $2120 (Sprint).

Here's the catch: you have to buy the phone outright. There are no special sign-up deals. Instead of the $199.99 you pay at Verizon and AT&T for an iPhone 4S, you pay $649.99. That's a chunk of cash.

What do you think? The numbers prove that Virgin's deal will save you buckets of cash, but is it worth it? I've never had Sprint service in the Magic Valley and I don't know how good the voice or data speeds are. Still, for what I pay a month to Verizon, I could get everyone in my family an iPhone--including my 3 year old--and still be saving money.
