KEARNS, Utah (AP) — A newborn baby girl is expected to be in critical condition for several days after Utah police say her mother dumped her in a neighbor's trash can in a Salt Lake City suburb.

Unified Police Detective Jared Richardson said Wednesday the two-day-old girl was still on a ventilator and fighting for her life in a hospital. The girl's mother, 23-year-old Alicia Marie Englert, was arrested Tuesday night on suspicion of attempted murder.

Police say Englert told investigators she hid the pregnancy from her parents and put the baby in the trash hoping the infant would die and the mother's problems would be solved.  Investigators say the infant received no medical care or food.

They believe the baby was in the trash bin for an hour before she was discovered by a neighbor Tuesday.
