BOISE, Idaho (AP) — A bill permitting the popular ride-hailing company Uber to bypass city ordinances and operate the way it wants in Idaho is on its way to the governor's desk.

The Idaho Senate passed the bill 23-11 on Wednesday. Four Republicans joined the chamber's seven Democrats in opposition. Democratic Sen. Maryanne Jordan from Boise, who is also president of the Boise City Council, says the bill's background checks aren't strict enough.

She also argued that the state should let each city decide its own regulations. Supporters countered statewide rules are better than a patchwork system of local ordinances. Uber suspended its operations in Boise in February after it couldn't reach a compromise with city officials.
