Twin Falls Prosecutor Says Police Justified for Shooting Suicidal Man
BOISE, Idaho (AP) — The Twin Falls County prosecutor's office says four Meridian police officers were justified in shooting and killing a 38-year-old man who had threatened them with a knife.
Prosecutor Grant Loebs announced Friday that no criminal charges would be filed against the officers who responded after Eric Dilworth's mother reported her son was threatening to kill himself. Officers encountered Dilworth, who had a large knife.
The investigation found Dilworth did not follow commands to drop the knife and instead approached officers in what witnesses described as an aggressive manner. He raised the knife when he got within 15 to 20 feet of the officers and moved toward them quickly.
All four fired multiple shots. Loebs said alcohol, over-the-counter medications, illegal drugs and the fact that Dilworth was suicidal were substantial factors in the shooting.
