Competition for a major golf championship, a fighting title and cycling’s biggest prize highlights this weekend’s sports offerings. Here’s what to watch this weekend in sports:

Friday, July 20

British Open

Royal Lytham & St. Annes Golf Course, Lancashire, England; 4:30 a.m. (EDT); ESPN-TV

The world’s best golfers tee off for the second round of the third major championship of the PGA Tour season. Rain is the biggest concern of the field, as showers and storms have soaked the course for much of the week. Tiger Woods, Lee Westwood and Rory McIlroy are among the favorites, with 2011 champ Darren Clarke also a threat.

Saturday, July 21

Chicago White Sox at Detroit Tigers

Comerica Park, Detroit, MI; 4:05 p.m. (EDT); FOX-TV

The top two teams in the American League Central square off in Detroit this weekend. Their Saturday meeting is one of the featured games on Fox’s national broadcast schedule. With a 2.5 game lead in the division, the Chicago White Sox (50-41) will send All-Star pitcher Chris Sale (11-2, 2.11) to the mound to face Prince Fielder, Miguel Cabrera and the rest of the Tigers’ lineup. Second-place Detroit counters with Rick Porcello (6-5, 4.66), who must find a way to limit the offensive output of Adam Dunn, Paul Konerko and the other White Sox power hitters.

UFC 149 — Urijah Faber vs. Renan Barao

Scotiabank Saddledome, Calgary, Alb.; 10 p.m. (EDT); Pay Per View

The UFC bantamweight championship is at stake on Saturday, as Urijah Faber faces Renan Barao. Faber is a tremendous all-around fighter looking for his first UFC title, while Barao is a natural grappler and skilled striker. The undercard features Cheick Kongo vs. Shawn Jordan and Hector Lombard vs. Tim Boetsch, among other fights.

Sunday, July 22

Tour de France

France; 8 a.m. (EDT), NBC Sports Network-TV

Britain’s Bradley Wiggins was still wearing the leader’s yellow jersey on Friday, as the Tour de France entered its final days. On Sunday, the riders will race from Rambouille to the Champs-Elysees in Paris to determine the overall champion.

British Open

Royal Lytham & St. Annes Golf Course, Lancashire, England 8 a.m. (EDT); ESPN-TV

The final round of competition at the British Open will feature golfers vying for a share of the $8 million purse. Australian Adam Scott led during early first round play on Thursday, but veterans like Tiger Woods, Padraig Harrington and Phil Mickelson are likely to challenge for the lead sometime over the weekend.

Texas Rangers at Los Angeles Angels

Angel Stadium, Anaheim, CA; 8:05 p.m. (EDT); ESPN-TV

The top two teams in the American League West will wrap up a three-game series in Anaheim on ESPN’s ‘Sunday Night Baseball.’ With a 5.5 game lead in the division, the Texas Rangers (55-36) have been one of baseball’s best teams in 2012. They’ll send All-Star pitcher Matt Harrison (12-4, 2.87) against Angels’ hitters like Albert Pujols, Mark Trumbo and Mike Trout. The second-place Angels (50-42) lead the AL Wild Card standings. Pitcher Garrett Richards (3-1, 3.53) will start for Los Angeles against the formidable Rangers’ lineup.
