‘The Quiet Ones’ Trailer: …And This Is Why You Don’t Create a Ghost

Once upon a time, Hammer Films was the studio behind seemingly every great horror movie that came out of England. ‘The Quiet Ones’ is the latest film to be released under that resurrected brand, and the newest trailer for the film promises a movie that seems to walk hand-in-hand with the studios’ classics. Well, at least in spirit. We’ll have to see how the whole “quality” thing works out.

The wonderful Jared Harris (who you’ll probably remember from ‘Mad Men‘ and ‘Sherlock Holmes: A Game of Shadows’) leads a cast of younger, prettier people, making him look like Hammer’s modern day answer to Peter Cushing. However, some of those younger, prettier people aren’t slouches, especially Sam Claflin, who practically stole the show in ‘The Hunger Games: Catching Fire.’

In true Hammer tradition, ‘The Quiet Ones’ takes place in a stuffy institute of higher learning and finds professors and scholars facing down a supernatural threat. Or, to be more specific, creating a supernatural threat and then having it ruin their lives. You see, ‘The Quiet Ones’ walks a fine line between gothic horror and science-fiction, watching what happens when this cast of characters sets out to create a ghost … and succeeds.

Although the new Hammer has yet to become the true juggernaut that it was decades ago, they knocked it out of the park with ‘The Woman in Black’ a few years ago, proving that they could still make chilling and classy horror movies with the best of them. Hopefully, ‘The Quiet Ones’ will continue that streak. Here’s the official synopsis:

A university student (Sam Claflin of The Hunger Games: Catching Fire) and some classmates are recruited to carry out a private experiment — to create a poltergeist. Their subject: an alluring, but dangerously disturbed young woman (Olivia Cooke of Bates Motel). Their quest: to explore the dark energy that her damaged psyche might manifest. As the experiment unravels along with their sanity, the rogue PHD students are soon confronted with a terrifying reality: they have triggered an unspeakable force with a power beyond all explanation.

‘The Quiet Ones’ will be released on April 25, 2014. If it’s on the same level as ‘The Woman in Black,’ consider our tickets bought.
