An exercise in earthquake preparedness will happen in Idaho this Thursday morning. It's the Great Idaho ShakeOut and we have good reason to pay attention this year.

If there's one thing we've learned in Idaho this year, it's that earthquakes are a real threat in our area and the danger should be taken seriously.

Idaho has been hit by an unprecedented number of earthquakes in 2017. In case you've stopped paying attention, the earthquake swarms near Soda Springs have not stopped. The USGS website has documented multitudes of earthquakes registering 2.5 or greater in magnitude.

That's why this year is a great time to participate in this preparedness exercise. The Great Idaho ShakeOut is scheduled for Thursday morning, October 19 at 10:19am. The objective is to understand how to drop, cover and hold on. There are also things you can do to prepare your home or workplace by making sure that everything that can be secured is.

According to the Great Idaho ShakeOut website, nearly 8,000 central Idaho residents participated last year. Let's hope that an even greater number is a part of this year's event.
