The Future of the Xbox is in the Cloud

Xbox 360

Despite rumors to the contrary, Microsoft Interactive Entertainment Business’ corporate vice president Phil Harrison believes the future of the Xbox brand will be less focused on devices.

According to CVG, Harrison spoke a bit in London about where he saw the Xbox brand heading. “Increasingly, the games are going to sit on the cloud,” Harrison said. “Instead of being device centric, they will be cloud centric. This vision is what influenced me to join Microsoft in the first place.”

Indicating how Windows 8 has helped bring the Xbox experience out of the living room, Harrison pointed to additional support in laptops, tablets, and smartphones allowing users to stay connected to Xbox even when they’re not at home.

Could this be an indicator of what lies ahead for the next generation console Microsoft is developing? Perhaps. A move to fully digital games that rest on a virtual server would be interesting, and the practicality of explaining that process to newcomers has become easier thanks to already existing services from companies like Apple. Just how far Microsoft plans to take its cloud services in the next year remains to be seen, but it will be very interesting to see just what they have in store for the next Xbox.
