I'm not big on New Year's resolutions, mainly because I don't usually keep them. However this year has to be different. This year I have to stick to them if I want to see 2014.

In 2013 I resolve to be healthier, and here's why...

I'm pretty certain that my warranty expired in 2012. Early in the year I suffered a major tear in my calf muscle as I was leaning over to pick up one of Jack's toys. Yep. No awesome sports story of glory, I was picking up my son's toys and tore the muscle sheath on my calf, and let me tell you that hurts like heck.

And in August I found out that I have extraordinarily high blood pressure. My doctor explained that my blood pressure was so high that my head could explode at any moment (or I'd have a heart attack, but that sounds way less dramatic). I've been rotating through a plethora of medications trying to find one to bring my pressure down, but so far haven't had much luck.

Add that to the myriad of other minor ailments I've suffered this year and I've come to one inescapable conclusion: At 36 I can't live like a 26 year old anymore. I have to grow up and start taking better care of myself.

So in 2013 I've resolved to create a healthier Terry. I want to learn to eat better and broaden my palette. I don't really like exercise, but I resolve to take more walks. In 2013 I want to learn how to swim (I have a fear of water where my feet can't touch bottom), and finally, I want to quit smoking. That's the big one. I'm coming up on 40 years old. It's time to stop living like a teenager and have a healthier life.

Happy New Year! May 2013 find you and yours blessed. You deserve it. We all deserve it.
