Taxes Done? Tuesday Is Deadline!

April 15 is typically the day that millions of Americans rush to file their income taxes before the deadline. That isn’t the case this year, as the deadline for filing taxes has moved.  April 15 fell on a Sunday this year. While that would normally mean that the filing date would move to Monday, this year provided a quirk that moved the deadline to Tuesday, April 17.  On April 16, D.C. observes Emancipation Day which, according to the District of Columbia’s website, celebrates the abolition of slavery in the District of Columbia. The Internal Revenue Service, as part of a law, observes the District of Columbia’s holidays like federal holidays. That means that the entire country gets that extra day, which created the new filing deadline. The filing deadline will return to April 15 in 2013.  The IRS is providing last-minute help for people who are using those extension days for procrastination instead of filing.  Still not enough time to file? You can file for an extension.  Keep in mind that an extension gives you until October 15 to file your return, but does not extend the deadline for when you have to pay.
