Although it's something we've never wondered ourselves, engineers at Open University in the UK recently discovered how high a LEGO tower can go before the bricks at the bottom are crushed under the weight. Here's a hint -- it's pretty darn high.

I couldn't even begin to calculate the number of hours I spent playing with Legos as a kid. I still remember my first set: it was a gray and white spaceship with a cool little mini figure astronaut pilot. I was always fascinated with the precise way the bricks fit together to form the amazing vehicles, robots, and playsets. This month Lego celebrates its 50th birthday.

Using only Legos and rubber bands, Jack Streat was able to build a fully-functional  replica of a Heckler & Koch UMP 45 sub machine gun.
