Stay Aware Even With Headphones On

I love music. All kinds in fact. It was one of the main reasons I got into radio in the first place.

It was also radio that lead me to discover how much I enjoy listening to music through headphones. There's something about experiencing a song's full sonic palette mixed with the privacy headphones offer that can't be replaced. But listening through headphones creates its own problem. Namely, cutting the listener off from the rest of the world.

It occurred to me tonight that my three year old son Jack will never know the world before Steve Jobs changed everything.

Jack knows how to make calls on my iPhone, play Angry Birds on his iPod touch, and can navigate his mom's iPad better than most adults I know. To him, everything is a touch screen and if it's not, it should be. Tonight while using Netflix to watch "Curious George" Jack was actually trying to press the on-screen buttons on the television like it was a giant iPad. To him, that's the way everything should work.

Should Jack's generation be re-dubbed the "iGeneration"?

If you own an iOS device (iPhone, iPod touch, or iPad) and have been anywhere near the Apple App Store in the past twelve months you’ve no doubt seen Angry Birds. It’s been sitting at the top of the charts for more months than I can remember and features truly fun and memorable game play. The story is this: there are birds. Green pigs steal their eggs. The birds get angry and vow to get their eggs back. Okay, it isn’t Shakespeare, but in the game you have to use the birds, with various different abilities, to slingshot into the pigs’ makeshift fortresses and get back your eggs. It really is fun. So much so that a real Angry Birds board game is in development.
