Story Behind The Song: Kid Rock, ‘Amen’

In November of 2007, Kid Rock released "Amen" as the second single from his Rock 'n' Roll Jesus album. The song, which features famed Nashville gospel choir the Fisk Jubilee Singers, touches on poverty, war, race relations and more tough subjects -- and Rock, who wrote the tune, calls it his very best. Below, the artist shares how he found the inspiration to pen "Amen."

This is the best song I've ever written.

Somebody told me that, as a songwriter, I needed to feel what the climate is around me and then write something relative to what is going on in the world. I went to a friend's house over in Malibu, overlooking a bluff, and I sat there and looked at the ocean. I thought, "Amen" -- what a powerful word.

So I started with the title and then wrote a song that was inspired by my frustration with social issues, like the war in Iraq and famine in Africa. But the song is also about the healing power of love. It was a very challenging song for me to write.

I think I have the ability to bring people together by speaking the truth. At least I've had people tell me that I do that.
