State Lawmakers in Utah to Talk Constitutional Convention

SALT LAKE CITY (AP) — A small but unwavering group of mostly Republican state lawmakers from 30 states are gathering in Utah to plan how state legislatures would hold a convention to revise the U.S. Constitution, a longshot meeting that hasn't occurred since 1787.

More than 80 state legislators will be meeting at Utah's State Capitol Wednesday through Friday for The Assembly of State Legislatures. The group has met periodically in recent years to discuss what it would look like to hold the first constitutional convention since the founding of the United States.

Actually holding a convention would require 34 states to call for one. Over the past few decades, 27 states have endorsed the idea but no convention has been held in more than 200 years. This week the group plans to set rules for holding a convention should one ever occur.
