Small Earthquake Rattles Central Idaho

Challis, Idaho ( KMVT-TV / KSVT-TV ) - The U.S. Geological Service report that a 3.8 magnitude earthquake shook the Challis, Idaho area around 6am Tuesday morning.  The epicenter was about 11 miles northwest of Challis. Police say they have been receiving calls reporting residents felt the quake. No damage has been reported from any of the 8 quakes that have been recorded over the past six days. Those have measured 1.6 to 3.3 in magnitude.  On Friday, October 28, 1983, the town of Challis was heavily damaged when a 6.9 magnitude quake hit the area at 8:06 am. It was originally reported as a 7.3 quake.  The Challis-Mackay area suffered some severe damage with 11 commercial buildings and 39 homes reporting major damage while another 200 homeowners say damage was minor to moderate. Two children walking to school were killed in Challis when a store front fell on them.  Mackay, 50 miles southeast of Challis, experienced the most severe damage. Nearly all of the city’s large buildings on Main Street were damaged. Eight were condemned and closed.
