Finnish powerhouse developer Rovio, maker of the mobile juggernaut that is Angry Birds, announced today that they would be soaring into the animation world with Angry Birds Toons, an all-new cartoon show that will be premiering in the middle of next month, on March 16.

While it may seem like surprising news at first, the move should really come as no surprise. If their very first trailer for Angry Birds is any indication, complete with all the references to classic Loony Tunes shorts, Rovio has been telegraphing this move from the beginning. Then add to that the Disney-sized aspirations of the studio and things just kind of fall into place after that.

And with the studio having recently compiled over one billion views on its YouTube channel, it seems like they are on their way (at least as much as you can be in this new digital frontier of broadcasting). Here they are all celebrating with a Harlem Shake:

The animated series of shorts will take place on the Piggy Island and feature characters from the game. In the show, Rovio plants to flesh out these characters, infusing them with some more personality beyond only what comes through in the games.

According to the studio in a blog post earlier today:

What makes Bomb Bird so angry? Why is the King Pig the King Pig? And are those mischievous piggies ever going to get hold of the eggs?
