CALDWELL, Idaho (AP) — Caldwell police officers are dealing with the loss of a longtime volunteer who died in a single-vehicle crash near Middleton.

Reserve Officer Jeff Irby died Monday night after his pickup truck veered off Idaho 44 into a partially filled canal around 10:30 p.m. He was off-duty. Canyon County Sheriff's Office officials say the 49-year-old was not wearing a seatbelt and was pronounced dead at the scene. Caldwell Police Capt.

Frank Wyant says Irby had volunteered with the department for more than 10 years. He took a full-time patrol job with the department for about a year around 2010 then decided he wanted to go back to his landscaping business but continue to volunteer as a reserve. Irby left a wife and three sons.
