Public Hearing Scheduled for City’s Comprehensive Plan
TWIN FALLS, Idaho (KLIX) – If you haven’t done so already, you still have time to review the city of Twin Falls’ Comprehensive Plan and share your thoughts and recommendations about it.
The first of at least two public hearings about the plan is scheduled for Tuesday, Sept. 27. After that, the Twin Falls Planning and Zoning Department will make recommendations and present the plan to the City Council, at which time a second public hearing will be held.
Already the city has received some 1,300 comments from residents about the plan, said Jonathan Spendlove, planner 1 with the P&Z department.
When people live here for a while they do want to see growth, but they want to see it done a good way. Generally, people are looking at this in a positive light.
“It’s been through a really long public comment process already, at least in our view,” he said. “We’ve been working on it for about 15 months. We’ve been taking public comments and making changes … on what people want to see happen with their community.”
Most of the comments reflect the desire for Twin Falls to keep its small-town feel, but have the amenities of a big city. Residents said they want to see pedestrian sidewalks and trail connectivity, housing and commercial development, while at the same time protecting the natural amenities of the area.
“The challenge,” Spendlove said, “is trying to shape the community into a really nice place to grow, live, play and work.”
The comprehensive plan isn’t an ordinance, he said, but once the City Council adopts it the document, which contains eight areas of focus, will function as a guide to direct city policy.
“Comments about it so far haven’t been real negative,” Spendlove said. “When people live here for a while they do want to see growth, but they want to see it done in a good way. Generally, people are looking at this in a positive light.”
The public hearing on Tuesday begins at 6 p.m. at the City Council Chambers, 305 Third Ave. East.
