Probability of a Killer Quake In The Magic Valley is Bigger Than You Think

We've had quite a few relatively small quakes in Idaho this year. None have done any real damage. But, last weekend, Oklahoma was shocked by a very strong (for them) 5.3 quake that damaged 40 to 50 homes. What's the likelihood that kind of quake could happen in the Magic Valley? Answer: bigger than you think.

My research led me to a website called Homefacts. The overall map of Idaho didn't surprise me. As you might expect, the Challis area and extreme southeastern Idaho has the highest risk. But, did you know that Twin Falls County has a nearly 15% chance of having an earthquake of magnitude 5.0 or greater in the next 50 years?

Cassia County has an even greater probability of a 5.0 or higher earthquake. According to Homefacts, there's a greater than 20% chance of that happening in the next half-century.

The largest quake in Idaho history was the Borah Peak quake of 1983 registering a 7.0 or 6.9 depending on who you believe.

If building shakers are a concern for you, might be time to head to Jerome or Minidoka County. Jerome rates a very unlikely 6.7% chance while Minidoka is at a very calm 3.6% for a big earthquake.

For the rest of us in Southern Idaho, might want to make sure the good china is in a safe place.
