BOISE (KTVB) -- Inmates finished harvesting produce at the Idaho Foodbank Garden at the South Idaho Correctional Institution Thursday.

Potatoes and winter squash from the six-acre garden are now headed to the tables of families in need.

The project is aimed at providing inmates with skills giving them a chance to give back to the community.

Inmates have been growing food for the foodbank since 2010, but this year's harvest is the largest yet.

Jerry Thiel, a farming advisor for the program, said that's good news for the people who rely on the food bank.

"The squash crop turned out very well, our potatoes were about 350, 400 sacks to the acre, so actually we're quite pleased with the crop turnout this year," he said.

Thiel said the prison workers are proud to be able to help.

"It's a very good feeling," he said. "It gives a sense of accomplishment to us advisers, to the prison wardens, and also the inmates - to be contributing."
