According to a few major retailers, Turtle Rock Studios' Evolve is going to help us ring in the New Year.

GameStop currently lists the anticipated follow-up from the Left 4 Dead developers as releasing on the PlayStation 4, PC and Xbox One on Dec. 31. While traditionally the Dec. 31 date has been the placeholder marker for games without a true release date, Evolve is a bit different in this case. As you can see in the image below, the release date has the initials "SD" next to the title. "SD" is shorthand for street date. You can also see those initials scattered throughout on game's we already know have solid release dates like Batman: Arkham Knight, Destiny and Evil Within. There are also other games marked there, such as The Order: 1886 and Mad Max that have placeholder dates and no initialing.

In addition, Amazon lists the Xbox One, PlayStation 4 and PC version for the same Dec. 31 release date. So do Toys 'R Us, Target and New Egg. Best Buy, Walmart, Steam and Game all list it as TBD at the moment. Interestingly enough, GameStop also lists DriveClub for the same Sept. 30 release date as Amazon, despite Sony's claims it has no firm date just yet.

Of course, neither 2K nor Turtle Rock has made an official announcement as of yet, so it's possible these retailers may have gotten a bit creative with Evolve's release date. We've reached out to 2K, and will update this story when and if they respond. Dec. 31 might be a very untraditional release date for a video game, but at least we'll have something to do on New Year's Eve with our friends should this turn out to be correct.

Update: The official Evolve Twitter has responded, saying, "Fall/Autumn 2014 is the only release window we've discussed." It added that retailers often use the last day of the year as a placeholder, but didn't outright deny the potential date either. Expect more in the coming months following PAX East and E3 2014.
