News has come out that PopCap Games, creator of fine games such as Plants vs. Zombies and Peggle, has been hit with a number of layoffs.]

According to Kotaku, PopCap has just laid off what is believed to be between 30-40 people. Apparently the company has been laying people off for the past year. A statement from PopCap general manager John Vechey said:

The changes we made today at PopCap were painful and we're sorry to lose some of our friends and colleagues. But it was also necessary in order to stay on course with our future plans for mobile games, live services, and new IP. PopCap is a studio that made its name building great games that the world can fall in love with, and that's what we'll continue to do.

We wish those affected by the layoffs the best. But it looks like we'll have to keep an eye on PopCap Games to see what other IPs are coming down the chute and how these layoffs will affect their development of their other projects. We'll keep you updated as more information about these layoffs is made available.
