We haven't made very much of Showtime's "psychosexual" monster-mash drama, 'Penny Dreadful,' since its debut a few weeks ago, but it seems the network wanted to make sure that scary Victorian creatures wouldn't go quietly into the night. Showtime officially renewed the Josh Hartnett-Eva Green period drama for season 2, expanding the initial episode order for 2015, as well.

According to Showtime, 'Penny Dreadful' season 2 will bow in 2015 with 10 brand-new episodes, as opposed to the initial eight-episode run that comprised the first season, currently airing Sunday nights on the premium cable network. Helmed by ‘Skyfall‘ duo Sam Mendes and John Logan, Showtime describes ‘Penny Dreadful’ thusly:

In PENNY DREADFUL, some of literature’s most famously terrifying characters – including Dr. Frankenstein and his creature, Dorian Gray and iconic figures from the novel Dracula – become embroiled in Victorian London. The series weaves together these classic horror origin stories as the characters grapple with their monstrous alienation.

For those unfamiliar with the series featuring ‘300: Rise of an Empire‘ star Eva Green and ‘Sin City”s Josh Harnett, ‘Penny Dreadful’ also features Timothy Dalton as hardened African explorer Sir Malcolm on a deeply personal quest, Reeve Carney as Dorian Grey, Helen McCrory as spiritualist Madame Kali, ‘Skyfall”s Rory Kinnear, and ‘Doctor Who‘ vet Billie Piper as an Irish immigrant seeking to escape her dark past.

Well, what do we think? Are you relieved to have 'Penny Dreadful' back to scare up more monster history in 2015? What have you made if the first season thus far?
